To select a victim, a criminal needs very little time for him to compose an idea of the person and weighs all the risks. Not everyone is suitable for the victim’s role. Yurii Irkhin, Head of the psychological research department of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise, at the request of the Ukraine TV channel’s journalists, helped the viewers to understand the difference between people who criminals never come close to and who are their victims and provide pieces of advice on how to protect from troubles.
According to the expert, there are no common clearly defined psychological signs of a potential victim of a swindler or a robber. There are certain principles by which attackers choose their victims among others. In this case, the composition of the total mass of people is of great importance, for example, this is a public place, recreation area or recreational activities.
“The most important criterion is not the identity of the victim, but the situation in which he or she may fall. The main task of the robber is to choose the right moment when the person himself is distracted or to create it artificially,” said Yurii Irkhin, an expert psychologist of KFI.
During the period of seasonal rest, robbers most often work in groups of three and play prepared performances. The role of each participant is individual and distributed in advance: while someone distracts attention, others carry out a theft.
Expert advice on how to protect yourself from swindlers and robbers is simple, first of all, do not overestimate your own capabilities, control the situation the situation and always assess risks, while staying in public places and on vacation (beach areas) closely monitor valuable things or the ability to leave in the safe places.
