Over the years, one of the main functions of the Secret Service of the United States of America has been to prevent counterfeiting of American banknotes and the detection of counterfeits. American experts conduct comprehensive work with foreign expert organizations and institutions to quickly identify and respond to crimes related to the circulation of counterfeit money circulation.
Having close cooperation and communication with American colleagues, experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise received a unique collection of US dollars. Samples of banknotes of different years and denominations were transferred to the laboratory of Criminalistics Research as well as provided the Institute the information materials on the recognition of signs of high-quality fakes, the common denominations and manufacturing methods.
The most common counterfeits in Ukraine today are banknotes in denominations of 100 and 50 US dollars therefore, the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise urges citizens to familiarize themselves with the basic elements of banknote protection, and to be vigilant with foreign and Ukrainian banknotes.
While handing over the collection, the US Secret Service spokesperson John Liau noted that, the event is unique to Ukraine, as such the collection of samples provided only to a few CIS countries.
The banknotes are made specifically for the work of experts of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise and are assigned to the Institute by the special serial numbers. The experts’ work with the collection’s specimens will facilitate faster, better and more comprehensive research of US banknotes.
