Recently, the mass media have been spreading reports about the facts of counterfeiting banknotes. The issue of counterfeiting banknotes is now particularly acute in view of the development of scientific and technological progress and the improvement of modern equipment that enables criminals to produce better counterfeits. Experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise told the media representatives about the needed research in such cases.
Victoriia Kulykovska, Head of the Questioned Document Examination Department of the Criminalistics Laboratory of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise told that in order to identify counterfeit banknotes, they are conducting a technical and forensic research. Sometimes, only with the use of equipment and special knowledge, it is possible to establish the fact of a fake.
Forensic experts pay attention to the following issues during the research:
- Has this banknote been counterfeit?
- How is it made?
- What materials were used in its manufacture?
- If the bill is valid, are separate parts (denomination, series, number, micro text) non-counterfeit?
- Identical or not, materials used in the manufacture of counterfeit banknotes?
Money fraud and all other illegal operations with counterfeit banknotes, both Ukrainian and foreign, encroach on the credit and financial and economic system of the state. The National Bank of Ukraine and other central banks are constantly improving banknote protection to strengthen counterfeiting and provide citizens with the opportunity to determine the authenticity of banknotes independently. In turn, forensic experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise are making every effort to help identify offenses related to counterfeiting banknotes, as well as strict reporting documents, biometric documents, etc.
