Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise continues cooperation with Dutch colleagues to investigate the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17

On July 5, 2017, the Government of the Netherlands announced that the criminal proceeding in the case the shooting down of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 would be carried out within the national jurisdiction of the Netherlands.

The relevant decision was made by the countries of the International Joint Investigation Team (JIT), which includes Belgium, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Malaysia and Australia. A mechanism of guilty people’s accountability for the crime has been developed by the joint efforts as well.

«The JIT have now decided that the suspects should be prosecuted in the Netherlands, a process that will be rooted in ongoing international cooperation and support. This means that the team’s cooperation will continue into the prosecution phase. Thanks to the MH17-treaty with Ukraine it will be possible for the prosecution to cover all victims» – it is informed on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands.

The President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko commented on the statement, saying that our country will maximally help and provide assistance to the Netherlands to punish guilty persons as soon as possible.

It would be appropriate to remind that, given the personal experience of participation in the investigation and conducting similar examinations, Oleksandr Ruvin, Director of KFI, was assigned to head a specially created Ukrainian part of the International Commission of Forensic Experts from Ukraine.

KFI is the main expert institutions of Ukraine which conducts research on high-profile proceedings taking place in our country. A number of examinations are unique for our country and have no analogues.

Oleksandr Ruvin, Director of KFI, together with foreign colleagues and the experts of the Institute carried out a series of chemical, trace evidence, ballistic and explosion and technical researches. In addition, unique investigative experiments were carried out on the territory of Ukraine, conducted biochemical analysis of the Buk Missile System’s strike elements, an expertise of the combat units of all Ukrainian anti-aircraft missiles and air-to-air missiles which proved Ukraine’s non-participation in the crime.

The conclusions made in joint work of the experts have become a significant contribution to overall results of the investigation of the International Investigation Team of the causes of the people’s deaths on board of the Malaysian aircraft.
