January 22, the day of the proclamation of the Act of Unification of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic, Ukraine annually celebrates the Day of Unity. The holiday was officially established in Ukraine by the Decree of the President of Ukraine “On the Day of Unity of Ukraine” as of January 21, 1999, No 42/99.
The epoch-making event took place on January 22, 1919. The Unification Act of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic was proclaimed on Sophia Square in Kyiv.
“The only parts of the united Ukraine that have been torn apart for centuries are united … The eternal dreams that the best sons of Ukraine lived and died for have come true”.
The Unification Act crowned the conciliar aspirations of Ukrainians in both parts of Ukraine, the east and west parts, at least since the middle of the XIX century. This was a fundamental event for Ukrainian statehood.
The Day of Unity of Ukraine is extremely important and one of the most important memorable days for our country. What is important to us is that we are one nation with a unique and rich cultural heritage, a deep history, a common goal and clear prospects, and any differences between us only enrich us, not divide us. The idea of a successful, prosperous, just, European Ukraine makes us a truly united nation.
Congratulations on the Day of Unity of Ukraine! We wish all Ukrainians good health and longevity, personal and social achievements and a peaceful sky above their heads!
