International scientific and practical round table “Legislative aspects of combating especially grave crimes in Ukraine” was held in Kyiv with the participation of the KFI

On March 14 and 15, 2024, Kyiv hosted an international scientific and practical roundtable on “Legislative Aspects of Combating especially grave crimes in Ukraine” organized by the OSCE and the Institute of Legal Training for the Security Service of Ukraine of the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University.

Opening remarks were delivered by Serhii Naumiuk, Deputy Head of the Security Service of Ukraine; Ambassador Marcel Pesko, Special Representative of the OSCE Chairmanship – Project Co-ordinator in Ukraine; Anatolii Hetman, Rector of the Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University; Oleksandr Bakumov, Member of the Parliament of Ukraine of the IX convocation, Member of the Committee on Law Enforcement; Bandurka Oleksandr, First Vice-President of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Full Member (Academician) of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Member of the Presidium of the National Academy of Legal Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Law, Professor, Honored Lawyer of Ukraine; Medianyk Viacheslav, Member of Parliament of Ukraine of the IX convocation; Rusinov Yevhen, Officer of the Security Service of Ukraine; Chernysh Roman, Senior Consultant (Legal Issues) of the Security Service of Ukraine, NACQA Expert, Candidate of Law, Associate Professor.

Nataliia Nestor, Deputy Director of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise made a presentation “Forensic Expertise as Evidence of Russia’s Military Aggression in Ukraine”, in which she emphasized the importance of examinations of the consequences of crimes of the Russian Federation against the Ukrainian people in achieving justice in international instances and compensation for victims.

Oleh Baulin, Head of the Department of Scientific and Regulatory and Methodological Activities of the Laboratory for the Organization of Scientific, Methodological Activities, Regulatory Support, International Cooperation and Expert Training, attended the roundtable as a listener.

During the event, the participants discussed combating especially grave crimes in the context of international humanitarian law; discussed the prospects, opportunities and conditions for creating an effective mechanism for compensation for damages caused to Ukraine; raised issues of overcoming the social consequences of gender-based violence related to the war, addressing problematic aspects of forensic and procedural nature, etc.
