Forensic psychological examination in respect of the Nadiia Savchenko’s case

On April 17, 2018 experts of Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise completed the next stage of the forensic psychological examination with the use of a computer polygraph concerning the People’s Deputy Nadiia Savchenko.

It should be remind that on April 5, 2018 Nadiia Savchenko arrived at Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise for an expert examination chosen by the investigator, but, as a result of uncoordinated procedural issues, she refused to conduct the examination on the advice of lawyers.

April 13, 2018 the research was impossible due to the several-week hunger strike of Nadiia Savchenko. Experts of KFI advised to stop the hunger strike for this period in order to fully carry out the research and obtain reliable conclusions.

Nadiia Savchenko was sympathetic to the experts’ proposal and temporarily stopped the hunger strike with an accent that she agreed to these actions for carrying out the research. Thus, it was possible to eliminate the fact of the hunger strike and to conduct a psychological examination with the use of a computer polygraph.

The examination procedure was followed within the framework of the corresponding methodology: it was a psychological research within the framework of forensic psychological examination. As one of the methods a computer polygraph was used. All questions provided by the defense and investigation party were pre-processed. During the research, the defender of Nadiia Savchenko, attorney Oleh Solovei, was present at all times. There were no comments on the conduct of the research on his part.

It should be noted that research with the use of a computer polygraph was not conducted in full. The experts did not reach the end of the list of declared questions, since psycho-physiological condition of Nadiia Savchenko did not change even after the hunger strike ended.

“There are two objective reasons for such circumstances. The first one is conscious resistance, that is, a person opposes research due to certain efforts, its general psycho-emotional background is too weak and it cannot be natural. The second reason is the intoxication of the body as a result of prolonged hunger strike,” noted Yurii Irkhin, the Head of the Psychological Research Department of KFI.

The results of the research are under development. Upon completion of the data processing, the conclusions of the forensic examination will be transferred to the pre-trial investigation body.
