Experts of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise took part in CEPOL training “Disaster Victim Identification, Management and Joint Operations”

Experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine took part in the CEPOL training, which took place from July 03 to 07, 2023. The training was conducted on disaster victim identification, management, and joint operations. The training was conducted at the International Training Centre at the University of Public Service in Budapest, Hungary.

The representatives of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise for the training were:

  • Larysa Oliinyk, Senior Forensic Expert of the Materials, Substances and Products Research Department of the Laboratory of Forensic Types of Research
  • Ruslan Demianenko, Senior Forensic Expert of the Forensic Speech, Audio Analysis and Forensic Information Technology Department of the Laboratory of Forensic Types of Research
  • Kateryna Pedko, Senior Forensic Expert of the Forensic Speech, Audio Analysis and Forensic Information Technology Department of the Laboratory of Forensic Types of Research

CEPOL training is one of the key events in the field of developing effective strategies and methods for responding to emergencies and disasters. The training was attended by experts from more than 20 European countries, and invited teachers and practical trainers were representatives of Portugal, Austria and Hungary.

The participation of experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise in this training was especially valuable. They had the opportunity to exchange experience with representatives of other countries, which will allow them to improve their skills and knowledge. The use of advanced methods of information technology and specialized equipment for quick and accurate identification of victims is an important component of the work of forensic experts. Therefore, such an exchange of experience and familiarization with best practices will help improve their work and ensure faster and more accurate identification of victims.

During the training, experts from the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise received a unique opportunity to exchange experiences with other participants from different countries, as well as learn how to use advanced methods of identifying victims. An important part of the training was the practical part for the participants, where they were able to solve situations that may arise in the event of an emergency or catastrophe as close as possible. Training participants were able to use various identification methods, including DNA analysis, fingerprints, and other biometric data.

Such trainings, organized by CEPOL, help create a network of professionals who can effectively collaborate and respond to emergencies, regardless of their location. Initiatives of this nature are an important step towards ensuring the safety and protection of citizens in case of emergencies and disasters.
