On January 22, 2024, Ukraine celebrates a great and significant holiday – Unity Day. In 1919, the Act of Unification was signed in Kyiv, uniting the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic.
The main tradition on the Unity Day is a human chain that Ukrainians form to symbolize the unification of the Ukrainian lands. The history of this tradition dates back to 1990, when the human chain stretched from Kyiv to Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk, Stryi, Ternopil, Zhytomyr and Rivne. According to various estimates, about three million people took part in the event.
Since then, it has become a good tradition that is organized every year in different parts of Ukraine. In Kyiv, on January 22, the two banks of the Dnipro River, the left and the right, are “united” in this way, symbolizing the unification of the East and the West of Ukraine.
Today, we celebrate the union of our hearts and forces to jointly create a whole and free country. This holiday is filled with respect for our past, patriotism, pride and faith in our common future.
May our every step be filled with dignity and love for our native land, and may this day bring us faith in a better, mutual future, understanding and peace. We wish you an inexhaustible source of energy, determination and warmth.
Happy Unity Day!
Our strength is in unity!
