July 28 is the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine, volunteers, and civilians who were executed, tortured, or died in captivity.

The war has resulted in significant human losses, including Ukrainian servicemen and servicewomen, volunteers, and civilians who were killed, tortured, or executed in Russian captivity.

In accordance with the Resolution of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, every year on July 28, the memory of those who became victims of crimes committed against Ukrainian prisoners, as well as all those who never returned from captivity, is honored at the state level. The date was chosen in connection with the Olenivka terrorist attack in July 2022—one of the most tragic episodes of the war.
