On November 04-08, 2024, in Budapest (Hungary), the Central European Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Training Center (CE CBRN-E TC), together with the FBI, conducted a training for specialists in the disposal of explosive CBRN items from Ukraine and EU member states on the topic “Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and Improvised Explosive Substances (IES)”.
The training was attended by Volodymyr Babenko and Oleksandr Vozniuk, Chief Forensic Experts of the Explosive Research Department and the Missile and Artillery Research Department of the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise.
During the theoretical part of the training, the following topics were considered: chemical composition of explosives; mixed improvised explosive materials based on ammonium nitrate and chlorates; synthesized improvised explosive materials, etc.
Thanks to the field visits, the experts gained practical skills, as they examined the synthesis of erythritol tetranitrate; performed detection/measurement exercises with G510, Pendar X10 and Gemini devices; learned how to handle improvised explosive devices; conducted detonation of improvised explosive devices, etc.
Such trainings are necessary for forensic experts, as the availability of information on the manufacture of improvised explosive devices allows criminals to do so, which is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious consequences.
